MEX-M1
Applications of Calculus to Mechanics
Model rectilinear and projectile motion; work with simple harmonic motion; analyse resisted motion.
Sample questions
- 1.A particle undergoing SHM has displacement x = 3cos(2t). Find its maximum speed and acceleration.
- 2.A projectile is launched at 20 m/s at 30° above horizontal. Find the maximum height and range.
Exam weighting
4–6 marks.
Common student mistakes
- ·Confusing displacement, velocity and acceleration (especially signs)
- ·SHM: forgetting that a = −n²x requires the restoring force towards the centre
- ·Incorrect integration of equations of motion under resistance
