Working with Combinatorics

Apply the multiplication principle, permutations, and combinations; expand using the binomial theorem.

Sample questions
  1. 1.How many ways can 8 people be seated in a row if two particular people must not sit next to each other?
  2. 2.Find the term independent of x in the expansion of (x + 2/x)⁶.
Exam weighting

3–5 marks.

Common student mistakes
  • ·Using permutations where combinations were required (or vice versa)
  • ·Forgetting to account for identical objects in permutation problems
  • ·Incorrect general term index in the binomial expansion
